Changing the amber bulb in the clear side markers

I swapped my amber side markers like so many of you for clear side markers because I wanted CLEAR side markers. But as you all know, the bulb that comes in the clear side markers is amber tinted. It annoyed me. So I just bought a white LED bulb to go inside it. Brighter, white not amber, should look significantly better, and uses 5x less energy -- more power for your accessories inside the cabin!

And both LED bulbs are only 4 bucks! These are the ones you need. You're welcome.

FWIW, I HATE when people have blinding bright white lights in their turn signals. I have no idea how bright the above mentioned lights are, but please keep this in mind. Go try them out and night and ask yourself whether you'd be happy following along behind that.

Now... being more productive to the conversation... back in the day, the solution to this was to use these sorts of things...

194 Chrome Mirrored Silvered Amber Bulb Bulbs Set | eBay

No idea of the size of the bulbs... that was just the first link to come up in Google... but you get the idea. They're still amber bulbs, but they're coated in a chrome mirror finish. This means that they light up amber as you really want them to, but any other time you look at the car, there's no amber to be seen through the clear housing.

So you get the look you want, AND the light you want.

You folks just might want to check your state laws to make sure changing the side marker light to clear from yellow is legal. I believe I read somewhere, some time ago, that the yellow side lights may even be federally regulated/mandated and you could receive a ticket for not having yellow bulbs behind a clear lens or clear bulb behind a yellow lens.....just so they show yellow.

Roger that Budman.

AFAIK all (and imports) must be "amber" aka why lens change-out is so popular and OK but only when they then have yellow bulb (aka Porsche Item).

Technically clear lens w white bulbs will not pass State Inspections. Unless of course you maybe slip inde at least a "Jackson".:hilarious:

Also if stopped by local PMan, I wonder what the cost  might be for bright white showing therein.

Cops everywhere probably don't care... But it's the sort of thing they'll tack on if they're in a pissy mood and just stopped you for speeding or something.

Again... Look at my post above. It's a perfect solution.

I can hardly see the bulb when it's not illuminated so I don't care. The whole reason I want to do it is so that it's not amber color when it's illuminated, so your solution won't work for that.

Most cops will let things slide if you are nice to them and know what to say. I've been pulled over 10 times. 0 tickets.

Man....you guys really hard on the guy. All he was doing is just offering a solution to getting rid of the clear bulbs. No need to hassle him about the laws and such. We are all adults and plenty capable of understanding the laws in our own state. I guarantee every single one of us on the forum break the big law of "SPEEDING" every time we drive our cars. No one is scolding us for that on here.

I got the Hoen bulbs, they do not show the yolk color until lit. I like them a lot.

Suncoast now has the dark tinted rear lens in stock. Just when I thought my car was perfect I have to contemplate spending another $400+ for this item. Bet though it would look awesome on a basalt car, thoughts?. Is this lens legal? (not sure I care but want to be prepared if I put down the bucks). Also, how hard is it to change out the lens??

It's an available option on the USA Configurator so I would really be surprised if it wasn't.

It is both fortunate and unfortunate that FL enforcement regarding safety equipment/lighting is so lax. I see dozens of illegal headlight violations on my way to work each AM. Also I see either blindingly bright tail light that look like brakes are engaged when they aren't, and also brake lights so dim that they are totally useless.
I would think the color and/or relectivity of side marker lights would be way down the list of enforcement priorities. A strict reading of that statute would even prohibit replacing the US amber light fixtures with clear ones (since they won't reflect amber when the lights are off). Let's hope they never take it that far.

As a boater, I do understand some of the reasons for motor vehicle lighting codes and uniformity. White lights are not supposed to be visible from an approaching craft (except for intermittent use of search/spot lights). In pitch black conditions, the orientation of visible red/green/white lighting tells alot about the coarse of other vessels. A white with either a red or green visible indicates you are overtaking a vessel from either the port or starboard rear quarter. Similar concepts apply (and are even more critical) to aviators.

Although vehicles don't have port/starboard (red/green) markers, the amber(front) and red (rear), and restrictions on where/when white light is allowed serve a similar purpose in providing important information on what a vehicle is doing and where it is going. So these laws aren't just nanny big govt putting arbitrary restrictions on us. I actually wish that LE and the driving public paid more attention to some of these issues. However I have a feeling that many of these infractions are just used as a techicallity to pull someone over to avoid an obvious "profiling" or harrasement situation. Not for real safety concerns.

This is what I have my on car.. white LED bulbs (so the housing is clear) with the signal blinking amber. I know a couple of folks here tried the silver-coated incandescent bulbs that blink amber color... but they didn't work out. I have to look, but I think i still have a few sets of these LED's if anyone is interested. LMK.
Here is what they look like on my car...

FEI - As per an email today from HOEN, they remain out of stock :( for the - W5W fitment dLED for Porsche $25 per pair - that are the ones (I think) Interpol has referenced in previous posts suitable for install as 981 clear markers. Show "amber" only when powered and then no egg yoke bulb needed.

Bob, no firm date yet I'm afraid, got into it with our supplier as the last
batch was too thick thus did not fit the connector. We are looking for
alternates but could be 2 months.
